In this paper, we have demonstrated that cell proliferation within crypts is a principal force to drive cell migration on villi. Previous published studies are controversial regarding the regulation of cell proliferation and cell migration. Through careful quantification and mathematical modelling, we have clarified this important unanswered question in the field.The developed  mathematical model is one of the most sophisticated that has to date been applied to describe BrdU label dynamics in the intestine.
